Dunlop
Home of the first pneumatic tyre
Today, we don’t think twice about buying pneumatic tyres for cars, motorbikes, vans, and all manner of other vehicles. We can thank John Boyd Dunlop for that – he’s the Scottish inventor of the tyre we’re all familiar with today.
Soon after, he went into business with Harvey Du Cros, and together they founded the Dunlop Pneumatic Tyre Company on 18th November 1889. As you’d expect, it took some time before Dunlop became known for its expertise in the tyre industry. However, by the time that occurred, John Boyd Dunlop was no longer part of the business.
The history of Dunlop
You might be surprised to learn that Dunlop Limited no longer exists. You’ll still find Dunlop Tyres available for sale though, under ownership of Sumitomo, a Japanese company. The original company ran until 1985, when it was taken on by BTR, who themselves are no more. They were also associated with Goodyear from 1999, so you can see the many changes that have occurred throughout their long history.
The Dunlop name is attached to various products nowadays, mostly produced by different companies that each hold the relevant trademark or brand name to do so. John Boyd Dunlop died in 1921, and the tyre that bears his name is still rolling over a century later. No doubt he’d be impressed by the developments in tyre technology that have occurred since then.
Dunlop tyres today
Today, you can shop the range of modern Dunlop tyres for cars, vans, and SUVs. You’ll find tyres suitable for the summer months, reliable tyres for winter conditions, and all-season tyres designed to handle all the conditions you might drive in throughout the year.
Well over a century since John Boyd Dunlop created his pneumatic tyre (designed at the time for his kid’s bike), Dunlop continues to innovate and create new models. Many also incorporate the RunOnFlat technology, allowing you to keep driving even with a puncture. This keeps you moving for up to 50 miles – enough to reach somewhere to change the tyre.
From the Sport Maxx RT2 SUV tyre to the All Season 2 model, there’s something in the range to fit your requirements and your vehicle. Dunlop tyres are also available in various widths, profiles, and rim sizes.
