Goodyear

Making tyres for over a century

You’d be forgiven for thinking Goodyear was the name of whoever created the company. However, we can thank a man called Frank Seiberling for that. He founded the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company – to give it its formal name – in 1898. He took inspiration from the man who invented vulcanised rubber in 1844. That man was Charles Goodyear.

While Goodyear is known for developing and selling millions of dollars’ worth of tyres every year, it’s arguably just as famous for the Goodyear Blimp. Today, the company has three semi-rigid airships in its fleet.

The history of Goodyear

Goodyear was founded in August 1898 in Akron, Ohio, and within a few short years, it was developing airships and balloons. The company still has its headquarters in Akron today.

The company has become known for innovation. Yet even at the beginning, many people chose Goodyear tyres because they were easy to remove when required and were low on maintenance. Today, you can fit Goodyear tyres and enjoy up to 50% less noise inside your vehicle when driving. You can also opt to get tyres that seal small punctures even while the vehicle is moving. Innovation has continued to be at the forefront of everything Goodyear does.

As you look back through the company’s history, you can see certain high points. For example, they were floated on the New York Stock Exchange back in 1927. By the time the next decade beckoned, they’d come up with new tyres for small aircraft – a design that would later become familiar as tundra tyres. They then played an active role in fighter aircraft manufacturing during the Second World War.

Goodyear tyres today

When you start looking at Goodyear tyres and how they’re made, you can see a company dedicated to making them as responsibly as possible. Way back in 2001, they came up with BioTRED, a compound made from corn that could be used in tyre creation. Today, they’re using rice husk waste to generate a source of silica to be used when making tyres.

You can also find tyres designed for the summer months, and tyres intended for excellent performance in every season. They also create tyres for cars and vehicles developed by over 120 manufacturers.

Goodyear is certainly a business that moves with the times. There’s no better example of this than their EV-Ready logo, which confirms that all their tyres are capable of excellent performance on all electric vehicles.
