Avon

Making British tyres for over 100 years

Railway components were first on the list of creations for the Avon India Rubber Company when it launched in 1885, well over a century ago. The company has gone through many changes since thenand now comes under the ownership of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company.

The name Avon remains synonymous with top-quality British tyres though, thanks to producing outstanding tyres that are suitable for all manner of vehicles.

The history of Avon

You don’t need to look too far to find the inspiration for the original Avon India Rubber Company. It was originally set up in 1885 in Avon Mill, which so happened to be situated on the banks of the River Avon in Wiltshire. Formerly used as a cloth mill, it became the hub, if you will, of what would become a major British tyre manufacturer.

It didn’t stay there long though, moving to new premises in Melksham. 1933 saw it become a public company on the London Stock Exchange. Thirty years later, it became Avon Rubber, as it became better known for its range of tyres, made for everything from bicycles to cars. It then merged with Cooper in 1997, before being taken on by the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, where the tyre brand remains active today.

Avon tyres today

Avon remains one of Britain’s most trusted and reliable tyre brands. They’re known for producing tyres that score well on lower noise levels on the road, while also offering decent fuel economy.

The Avon range includes many tyres created for all manner of vehicles. You can invest in Avon tyres for your car, van, SUV, and even your motorcycle if you wish. In common with many other leading tyres brands, Avon supplies tyres for summer or winter conditions, along with all-season options.

All-season tyres from Avon have the 3PMSF approval rating, so you can count on having supreme safety features and the ability to grip the road in all weather conditions. Features include modern technology involving silica and resin for the best performance.

Meanwhile, Avon also caters for modern high-performance cars, with the ZV7 combining impressive wet grip with multiple safety features and better noise reduction features. Alternatively, drivers looking for a reliable tyre for the daily commute and trips out at the weekend will appreciate the ZT5.This offers an asymmetrical tread with good performance in wet and dry conditions. It also wears well, providing excellent value for money.

Finding the ideal Avon tyres for your vehicle

Firstly, consider whether you need an all-seasons tyre or whether you’re a fair-weather driver. You should also compare two or more tyres to consider the relative performance of each. Consider tread wear – do you need something that will last longer and provide greater value for money? Do you want less noise when you’re driving?

Consider handling aspects too. Some Avon tyres are designed to handle a range of conditions better than others. The Avon WV7 Snow tyre is a good example of this. Whatever you need, there’s something in the Avon range for you.
